The catfish toss became so popular that animal activist group PETA tried to intervene and asked Nashville Predators fans to stop throwing catfish, even though the catfish were dead. The catfish toss gained even more recognition throughout the hockey world in when four Nashville Predators season ticket holders documented how they sneak the catfish into Bridgestone Arena.

Catfish gets thrown at Bridgestone Areana. Throwing it over the glass and onto the ice is even tougher. Fan Wes Collins concealed a pound catfish into the arena and tossed it onto the ice before the Predators' first home playoff game last year against the Chicago Blackhawks. Using plastic wrap, Collins sealed the catfish to his body. He then pulled on an extra-large Predators jersey to conceal the bulge.
Collins, a Williamson County medical supplies salesperson, and his buddies Austin Casselman and Jonathan Hardin walked through security and to their seats. As the national anthem began, they left their seats and got into position for the dump. The catfish-tossing tradition reached the national stage during the first game of the Stanley Cup Final when Jacob Waddell , of Nolensville, tossed a catfish onto the ice in Pittsburgh. Police escorted Waddell immediately from the arena and charged him with disorderly conduct, disrupting a meeting and possession of an instrument of crime.
The charges were later dropped.
