Can you reuse motorcycle grips

The stock Harley-Davidson grips are terrible in both look and function, so I wanted an upgrade. Need new grips for your Harley? Shop our full selection of motorcycle grips now. For most bikes, removing the stock grips is a pretty simple process. For my Harley-Davidson FLSTC, it was as simple as removing two torx screws in the housing, then sliding the grip off from the bar. The first screw sits in the top, toward the back of the housing. The second screw is under the housing and toward the front.

Once those screws are removed, the top of the housing lifts right off. Once both sides of the housing are removed, the throttle grip slides right off. The instructions provided with the Tracker grips say to use a long-shank, flat tip screwdriver to remove the grip, but I found that slicing the grip with a sharp knife and then peeling it off was a better option. Depending on which grips you choose, your installation process could be slightly different. Specifically, some throttle side grips will have a two piece installation with a throttle tube and a grip that will need to be slid over it.

Lucky for me, and perhaps because of the electronic throttle on the FLSTC, the Tracker throttle grip is a one piece design.

All I had to do was make sure that the logo was in the right position and then slide the grip into place. If you are too rough during the wedge and spray process, you run the risk of scratching or damaging the Bike Grip or handlebar. If you scratch them enough, they may never fully seal on your handlebars again. This is why I use a high-quality plastic tire wedge like this one from Dicks Sporting Goods.

It is sturdy enough to allow you to apply a considerable amount of force, without being so sharp or hard that it can damage your Bike Grip. This can cause it to become loose or even rip. The challenge is using just enough lubricant and force to work the Bike Grip off the handlebar without damaging it. Since push-on grips use their elasticity and the bonding process during installation, it can be challenging reusing Bike Grips.

The good news, is that if you are careful during the removal process, you can actually reuse Bike Grips. Just remember to check them for safety before using them in any extreme situations like Mountain Biking.

In fact, with a little patience and a few common household items you should be able to remove your Bike Grips without damaging them completely. When I first started cycling, I was surprised by the fact that I could lose weight with such a fun form of exercise.

I immediately started doing research to find out how much I should cycle each day When it comes time to take a road trip with your bike, you can be worried about traveling for such long distances. In addition to making sure you have the right bike rack, it is also a good idea to Skip to content. Unfortunately, this cannot be said about a lot of Bike Handlebar Grips.

Here is how you can remove your Bike Grips without cutting them. Use WD As universal as WD is, it is one of the best lubricants on the market. And being so common, there is a good chance you already have this laying around the house. Use Dish Soap and Water. Use Rubbing Alcohol. Use Compressed Air. The compressed air method is one that some riders swear by, however, it is often lesser known.

Some riders have even mentioned using tire and ball pumps with the thin metal nozzles. Another thing to keep in mind, is that this will only work on really secure Bike Grips. I had to shave the original rubber grips off both the throttle tube and handlebar to install glue on new rail grips. Those original grips are really glued on! Next time I will just buy a new throttle tube.

On more cooperative grips, try carb cleaner rather than WD You can also use it to glue new grips on. Another trick is hair spray, especially when installing the grips. Talking about being glued on. I've also used it to remove grips. As I posted the previuos owner had H-D heated grips, which are chrome, and cannot easily just be cut off. The grips I ordered said they were for and up which is the years that had a throttle and an idle cable i believe , and did not say throttle sleeve was not inlcuded, but they arrived with no sleeve.
