Many African-American men on the DL say there are two salient features that contribute to this subculture — white gay culture and the black church. Long did not created the homophobic climate in the black church, but he certainly contributed to it. As the largest it could have begun, with his sex scandal, to effect change by embracing a liberating, healthy, and holistic understanding of human sexuality. In so doing, Long would had created a model of pastoral care not only for heterosexuals or homosexuals, but most importantly, for himself.

He was the pastor of Atlanta mega church New Birth Missionary Church, which boasted more than 25, members at its height. Instead of fighting back or leading another march, Bishop Eddie Long settled the case quietly.

Single mothers and college students had faithfully given their 10 percent back to God which were being spent to protect a purported predator and silence his accusers. I got my high school diploma where Bishop Long stood recently inside New Birth looking gaunt after rapid weight loss over the last year. The photos raised many eyebrows. He claimed a vegan diet, though public opinion leaned toward illness. After his death, a press release from the church stated he had an aggressive form of cancer.

His life sheds light on the enduring cracks in one of our most essential supports for the African American community: the Black church.

There are the Baptists with the big hats. The Methodists offering a sprinkle for baptism, leaving you and your new hairdo saved. The Pentecostal who shake the walls with the spirit. Bush, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton attended her funeral service. He is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.

Long who is now spiritually healed and home with the Lord. Bishop Long, Senior Pastor of New Birth, transitioned from this life early Sunday morning after a gallant private fight with an aggressive form of cancer. As a man of God with unyielding faith, Bishop Long maintained his commitment to our Heavenly Father as he proclaimed that cancer would not kill his faith nor his spirit. Deeply committed to his church, even in his last days, Bishop Long delivered his final message to New Birth as we ushered in He told the church that God was already working in our favor and what we have been praying for was already manifested.

In his departure, we receive that and as faithful members of New Birth, we praise God for the life of Bishop Long. Bishop Long was known as one of the most influential faith leaders in the world. He stood strong as a Kingdom Builder, pioneering leader, and revolutionary mind changer. Long was a family man and spiritual leader who was well respected and loved for his passion to unapologetically and courageously preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Long inspired thousands of believers around the world through his global ministry that literally changed lives. Through his earthly battle, Bishop Long believed that God was once again using him to help others see the power of the Holy Spirit through the love New Birth displayed to him and the countless prayers sent up by others from every corner of the earth.
